The most common reason to take an 8-hour traffic school course is because you’ve been ordered to do so by the court after receiving a traffic ticket.
In some counties, you can also elect to take an 8-hour traffic school course if you want to have your ticket dismissed by the court, but you’re not eligible to take a 4-hour course because you’ve already taken it once in the last 12 months or 5 times in your lifetime. Contact your court to find out if this is an option for you!
Most courts will tell you to take an 8-hour course offered by any school that is approved by the Florida DHSMV to offer a Basic Driver Improvement course. If that’s the case, you’ve come to the right place! You may be court ordered to take an 8-hour traffic school course by a judge after receiving a traffic ticket.
In some counties, you can also elect to take an 8-hour traffic school course to have your ticket dismissed by the court. This option may be available if:
- You have already elected to take 4-hour basic driver improvement once in the last 12 months
- You have taken 4-hour basic driver improvement 5 times in your lifetime
When your court orders you to take an 8-hour traffic school course or you elect this option to dismiss a traffic ticket, they will tell you how long you have to complete your course. You must complete your course by the deadline, or risk having your license suspended.

You must turn in your certificate to the court that ordered you or is allowing you to take the course. Be sure to find out and follow the court’s requirements. You may be able to bring it in person, or mail it in.
If your court has ordered you to take an 8-hour traffic school course, then yes, you must take the course or your license may be suspended. A 4-hour course will not be accepted as a substitute.
To avoid points from a ticket, you would normally need to take the 4-Hour Basic Driver Improvement Course. Attending an 8-hour course for this purpose is only permitted for certain counties and courts if you are not eligible to take the 4-hour course. When electing this option, make sure to find out from your court if there are any penalties for failing to complete the course. For example, the Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts advises that once you elect the 8-hour course it becomes mandatory and you are required to complete the course.
When signing up for the course, you will need to provide the name of the county and court where you received your ticket. When you complete the course, you will need to turn in your certificate of completion to that same court.
If you received a traffic ticket in Florida but you live out-of-state, you are still required to either pay the ticket, fight the ticket, or complete an online traffic school.
If a Florida court has ordered you to take an 8-hour traffic school course but you live out-of-state, you are still required to fulfill the court order.
If you have a commercial driver's license (CDL) and receive a Florida traffic ticket, you must notify your employer within 30 days of conviction. Depending on the type of violation, you could face a fine, CDL suspension, or even permanent revocation.
